Dowager Duchess Audrey finds herself in yet another murdery pickle。 She and Hugh have to solve a series of murders to clear her name as a suspect。 This time they get to spend some time in Dover at winter。 As always, the murder mystery was very entertaining。 This is an excellent, well written series I highly recommend。I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。

Audrey is truly a force to behold! I really enjoyed seeing pieces of this story connect to both her past and future。 A murder mystery definitely one of many things binding Audrey and Hugh together。 With suspense and unfolding detective work, it was hard to put the book down as the perpetrator seemed just out of reach right till the end。 Resolution of this plot was satisfying, yet I feel that there may still be more unrest for this couple。 I sure hope I am right!I received an advance review copy Audrey is truly a force to behold! Nature of the Crime is book 6 in A Bow Street Duchess Mystery by Cara Devlin。 I find that this series is excellent。 Audry and Hugh are such outstanding main characters。 With Audry a "Widow", she and Hugh are looking to have a life together if he can prove Audry innocent of murder。 Plus, the " Duke" must stay dead! The 6th short novel in Cara Devlin's series of historical crime books about Audrey, now a dowager Duchess, and Hugh, a former Bow Street Runner and now a peer。 It is not standalone: some of it may not make full sense without a basic knowledge of the backstory, which is to be found in preceding books。 The novel combines romance with crime, but the romance is less central than in some earlier novels, and I think the book is stronger for that。 It is also more tightly plot-driven than some of its pr The 6th short novel in Cara Devlin's series of historical crime books about Audrey, now a dowager Duchess, and Hugh, a former Bow Street Runner and now a peer。 It is not standalone: some of it may not make full sense without a basic knowledge of the backstory, which is to be found in preceding books。 The novel combines romance with crime, but the romance is less central than in some earlier novels, and I think the book is stronger for that。 It is also more tightly plot-driven than some of its predecessors。 It starts fairly dramatically with Audrey accused of murder, and the pace remains fairy fast throughout。I thoroughly enjoyed it。 。。。more

I really do like this series, but one needs to read the books in order to get the full understanding of what the main and secondary characters are like。 This time the heroine is accused of murder even though she has an air tight alibi。 The hero is again drawn in to help solve the case。 The villains are plentiful。 Their love is evident, but still has some obstacles。 Can’t wait for the next installmentI received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。

I only gave it 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ compared to the first book。 I love this series but it's hard to explain why? So much happens it's like trying to describe a year in a soap opera。 But then, the same could be said of Dickens, Hugo, or Bronte。 The series has three things going for it。1-It's eminently readable。 The stories just flow。2-The characters are people you want to know and revisit。 Not just the main characters but all the supporting cast come alive。 You care about them。 3-The mysteries are interesting。 I only gave it 4⭐⭐⭐⭐ compared to the first book。 I love this series but it's hard to explain why? This installment of the Bow Street Duchess Mystery series, the penultimate book of the series, is FANTASTIC! It is well-written, intricately plotted and edgy with suspense。 It sees the return of Audrey Sinclair, now the Dowager Duchess of Fournier, to England after spending five months on the Continent with her sister-in-law, Lady Cassandra, during her mourning period for her husband, Philip, the "late" Duke of Fournier。 But before she can return home to Hugh Marsden, the newly minted Viscount N This installment of the Bow Street Duchess Mystery series, the penultimate book of the series, is FANTASTIC! It is well-written, intricately plotted and edgy with suspense。 It sees the return of Audrey Sinclair, now the Dowager Duchess of Fournier, to England after spending five months on the Continent with her sister-in-law, Lady Cassandra, during her mourning period for her husband, Philip, the "late" Duke of Fournier。 But before she can return home to Hugh Marsden, the newly minted Viscount Neatham and the man whom she loves, her involvement in a murder on the returning packet ship sees her being detained in Dover。 As usual, Hugh and his band of Merry Men, including Lord Grant Thornton and the adolescent Sir, arrive to aid Audrey in her defense。 Cara Devlin skillfully draws on what has gone before in the previous 5 books to shape this whodunit and the why of it。 It also raises questions as to what's actually become of Philip and will he come to Audrey's aid when she needs a ducal defense the most? Reading this book is like visiting with old friends who have become dear to us, and at times, it is tender and humorous。 Hugh and Audrey, despite having a bumpy start in this book, felt true to who they have been in the previous books, yet continue to grow as a couple。 Hugh is perhaps one of my all-time favorite heroes because he is loyal and loving, with both Audrey and Sir。 I appreciated that Hugh allows Audrey and Sir to have their own agency when it comes to their lives。 He also knows he can rely on his best friend, Grant Thornton, and we begin to see how Thornton and Cassie are going to have to work past their prickly interactions to grow together。 And of course, it's lovely to see the further development of Greer beyond her being just Her Grace's maid。 Overall, it was such a joy to read this book, and already I am counting down the days till the last book of the series, Taken to the Grave, arrives in March 2024。 A beautiful addition to what has been a very enjoyable mystery series。I'm sticking with Hugh Marsden and Audrey Sinclair and all their friends and family until the very last word of Taken to the Grave!I received an advance review copy for free from BookSirens, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

Their happily ever after is so close I can taste it after a fantastically sustained slowburn throughout the series。 But, of course, there must be a murder mystery that puts them in a tricky situation。 This time, it’s Audrey who stands accused of murder, and Hugh immediately rushes to her side。I adored the central mystery in this, even though I was also cursing Philip for continuing to cause problems for Audrey。 Philip, Philip, Philip… sigh, I’ll always have complicated feelings towards you。 But I loved how this book was so interconnected with earlier books in the series – it felt like a full circle moment as we draw closer to the end of the series (I’m in denial about that, BTW)。 I adored all the twists and turns in the mystery, as there were plenty of red herrings。 I liked that the culprit was revealed a tad earlier than usual, as it kept me on the seat for what would happen next。 They knew who their suspect was; they just had to find them。 The last act of this book made me anxious, and I’ve learned, thanks to the Veronica Speedwell series, never to get in boats in a historical lady detective series。Now that Audrey and Hugh have expressed their feelings for one another, I was worried the romance would lose its luster a bit。 But Devlin manages to keep the romantic tension burning strong。 The book opens up with Hugh and Audrey’s relationship in a tough spot, as they both believe the other didn’t write to them over the last six months while Audrey was traveling the continent。 They fear the other has lost interest, but of course, someone has been intercepting their letter (a trope I love!)。 But I appreciated that they addressed the letter issue and potential other issues early on instead of letting it stew and ruining their relationship。 It ends up making them stronger and their reunion even more emotional。 My god, how much these two love each other! They’re truly made for each other。 And I love watching them in love! They truly see the best in each other and let the other play to their strengths。 And the ending! Their happily ever after is so close you can taste it and I’m all ooey-gooey inside about it。Also, I love all the little side romances going on in this! I continue to love watching Thornton and Cassie interact – I want their story so badly as it’s clearly hinted at that there is something there。 Both Cassie and Thornton have some scars from previous relationships, but I feel they’ll be so good together! I also loved seeing Audrey’s lady’s maid, Greer, getting cozy with Audrey’s coachman, Carrigan。 Carrigan and Greer have had Audrey’s back since day one, and I love them getting their own little happily ever after!I adore how much Audrey has grown throughout the series! Audrey is more confident in herself and her abilities, and I love seeing her flourish。 She’s steadfast, driven, and intelligent。 She trusts her gut, which always seems to lead her in the right direction, even if it also puts her in danger。 Her moral compass is always pointing in the right direction, as she’s even willing to sacrifice her own happiness if it means justice can be served。 One of my favorite things about Audrey in this book is that she saves herself。 When she’s been in danger in the past, Hugh always comes in to save the day, but Audrey had to take matters into her own hands this time。 I was cheering for her, as she had the strength to do it。I feel we’ve also seen a huge change in Hugh。 His circumstances have changed wildly over the course of the series, but he’s still an investigator at heart and will do anything to protect Audrey。 He was in a bit of a rough state at the beginning of the book – I don’t think we’ve ever seen him such a mess, but when Audrey needs him, he immediately comes running。 He’ll do anything for those he loves。 I also love that Hugh has learned to let Audrey be who she is, and he’s so dang proud of her for it。 This man – swoon! I love him, as he loves Audrey so much and will do anything to be with her and keep her happy and safe。I’m currently in deep denial that only one more book is left in the Bow Street Duchess Mystery series! I want the final book in my hands right now, but I also want to savor it as I don’t want to say goodbye to these characters as I adore them so much! It’s not every day that a book series so quickly captures my heart, but this series is truly something special。 Cara Devlin has truly written a deeply engaging, romantic series filled with characters with a lot of heart。 I implore everyone to pick this series up, especially if you like the Veronica Speedwell or Lady Sherlock series or the Miss Scarlet and the Duke TV show! If you want a master class in the slowburn romance, this series is it!Thank you to BookSirens for the ARC。 All thoughts, ideas, and opinions expressed in this review are my own。 。。。more

Who is leaving notes on dead bodies accusing Audrey of murder and even more worrying, who is leaving notes in Audrey’s room about Phillip? The mystery keeps things moving along at a good pace, the romance between High and Audrey keeps me thoroughly involved in the book。 Devlin’s writing style just sweeps me along with the story until I reach the conclusion。 I cannot stop until I know what happens。 lol。I love Hugh’s character, his drinking shows that he has insecurities like the rest of us do and his devotion to and love for Audrey shines through his thoughts and actions。 Audrey is tenacious, clever, courageous and absolutely head over heels in love with Hugh。 I was so relieved that they discussed the letters… or lack thereof… and quickly resolved any misunderstanding between them。 I hate when that type of misunderstanding is allowed to persist for the whole book。 Fortunately Devlin writes Hugh and Audrey as down to earth, sensible (well mostly sensible) characters。As I suspected Phillip’s decision has come back to haunt Audrey and thereby, Hugh。 I fear we will see even more negative consequences arising from Phillip’s selfish decision in the next book before Audrey and Hugh hopefully get the HEA they deserve。The side characters, like Cassie, Sir, Basil, Thornton, etc are becoming more compelling with each book。 I find myself almost as eager to see them on the page as I do Audrey and Hugh。 I have enjoyed watching Greer and Carrigan grow ever closer over the series。 Is there hope for Cassie and Thornton? Why yes, I think there is and I look forward to reading that。 (The author has said Thornton will get his own story。)I shall be sad to see the end of this series since I’ve enjoyed it so very much。 From the first few chapters of the first book, I knew this was going to be a terrific series。 Devlin has not let us down with this book。 It’s wonderful!Btw, you really should read the other books to fully understand the characters and history in this book。 It’s a much better reading experience if you do and why wouldn’t you want to, they are just as much fun to read。I received a free advance review copy from Book Sirens and I’m leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

(if I have any complaint, it’s that the books are too short and end too soon)I for one I’m looking forward to the last book if nothing more for the promise of Audrey and Hugh's hard fought well deserved HEA。Stay tuned…。I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

"Nature of the Crime" by Cara Devlin is an absolute page-turner that begins with a bang and maintains its gripping intensity until the very last page。 I made the rookie mistake of cracking it open at 10 pm last night, expecting to read just a few chapters。 Big mistake。 I was so captivated that sleep became a distant thought, and I found myself unable to put the book down until I reached its thrilling conclusion。Devlin's storytelling prowess shines through, throwing Audrey and Hugh back into acti "Nature of the Crime" by Cara Devlin is an absolute page-turner that begins with a bang and maintains its gripping intensity until the very last page。 I made the rookie mistake of cracking it open at 10 pm last night, expecting to read just a few chapters。 Big mistake。 I was so captivated that sleep became a distant thought, and I found myself unable to put the book down until I reached its thrilling conclusion。Devlin's storytelling prowess shines through, throwing Audrey and Hugh back into action as secrets are threatened to be revealed。 Racing through the advanced readers copy, I was hooked from the start, eagerly anticipating each twist and turn。 Now, as I impatiently count the days until the next book, I can't help but hope for the epic ending Audrey and Hugh truly deserve。 This review reflects my unfiltered enthusiasm for the wild ride, courtesy of the generosity of that advanced copy。 Here's to late-night reading adventures and to Devlin, who crafted a tale too good to resist。 。。。more

“Nature of the Crime” is the 6th installment in Cara Devlin’s Bow Street Duchess series。 This time Audrey is accused of murder on her way home from an extended stay on the Continent。 She manages to get a missive off to her brother-in-law Michael, before being hustled off, under guard, to a local inn。 The local magistrate seems to be unfairly targeting Audrey, but she has never met him before。 Reinforcements, including Hugh Marsden, arrive to extricate Audrey from her predicament, but the case ju “Nature of the Crime” is the 6th installment in Cara Devlin’s Bow Street Duchess series。 This time Audrey is accused of murder on her way home from an extended stay on the Continent。 She manages to get a missive off to her brother-in-law Michael, before being hustled off, under guard, to a local inn。 The local magistrate seems to be unfairly targeting Audrey, but she has never met him before。 Reinforcements, including Hugh Marsden, arrive to extricate Audrey from her predicament, but the case just gets more and more complicated as clues are uncovered。 Enemies abound as Audrey and Hugh race to uncover the truth before it’s too late。I love this series。 There is action, adventure, and a slow-burn romance。 The supporting cast of characters are as delightful as Audrey and Hugh (I’m hoping for some spin-offs)。 “Nature of the Crime” is a quick and satisfying read that will leave you wanting more。This book is great for readers who like historical mysteries and slow-burn romances。 I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

It's amazing to look back on this book and the Bow Street Duchess series overall and see how well-plotted this larger, overall story is。 Yes, the books can standalone, but read together, you get to see threads from earlier books reemerge in later ones。 That's the case in this story, in which Audrey is framed for murder, but it's made all the more exciting when previous events in the series become part of the investigation into what really happened。As the story opens, Audrey is returning to Engla It's amazing to look back on this book and the Bow Street Duchess series overall and see how well-plotted this larger, overall story is。 Yes, the books can standalone, but read together, you get to see threads from earlier books reemerge in later ones。 That's the case in this story, in which Audrey is framed for murder, but it's made all the more exciting when previous events in the series become part of the investigation into what really happened。As the story opens, Audrey is returning to England after a months-long trip to the Continent with her sister-in-law (Cassie), their maids, driver (Carrigan!), and a footman。 A man is found dead on the boat with a note accusing Audrey of murder。 She's immediately taken into custody while the footman races to London to fetch her brother-in-law, Michael, who is now the Duke of Fournier。 Of course, Michael gets Hugh and Sir to come along。On top of the twisty mystery with multiple villains, we get Audrey and Hugh's reunion and the budding relationship between Thornton and Cassie (who are set for their own enemies-to-lovers story)。 There's some fascinating detail about the Western Heights of Dover as well。 Plenty of stories have characters using Dover to get to France, but I have never gotten much detail about the area。 The descriptions of the Grand Shaft were so fascinating that I had to google and read more。 Fascinating! There was a moment when I was dreading a prolonged miscommunication storyline, but Audrey and Hugh talked through the issue like the adults they are。 Of course this unusual couple isn't going to fall into the trap that other couples do!I received an advance review copy for free, but I have loved this series so much that I have purchased physical copies of book and will do the same with this one。 。。。more

I am thoroughly enjoying this series and this 6th book does NOT disappoint。 It continues the story of Audrey and Hugh - who are part of privileged society but are not quite accepted。 Audrey's past husband (a closet homosexual - who vanished to have a life) still keeps Audrey and Hugh apart and together。Someone else appears to know that Philip is still alive and Audrey is then accused of murdering the person who is spying on her。 This is an interesting tale of how this love story untangles。I rece I am thoroughly enjoying this series and this 6th book does NOT disappoint。 It continues the story of Audrey and Hugh - who are part of privileged society but are not quite accepted。 Audrey's past husband (a closet homosexual - who vanished to have a life) still keeps Audrey and Hugh apart and together。Someone else appears to know that Philip is still alive and Audrey is then accused of murdering the person who is spying on her。 This is an interesting tale of how this love story untangles。I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more

The Bow Street Duchess Mystery series very quickly became one of my favourite series of 2023 and this recent installment has got 2024 off to a very promising start。 It was a great read。 I ended up reading it in one sitting, eager to see if my conclusions proved correct。 I will say that you do need to have read the previous books to understand important circumstances covered in this book。The narrative starts only a few months after the last book, with the Duchess still in mourning and returning f The Bow Street Duchess Mystery series very quickly became one of my favourite series of 2023 and this recent installment has got 2024 off to a very promising start。 It was a great read。 I ended up reading it in one sitting, eager to see if my conclusions proved correct。 I will say that you do need to have read the previous books to understand important circumstances covered in this book。The narrative starts only a few months after the last book, with the Duchess still in mourning and returning from her trip with Cassie abroad。 The whole plot takes place in a new setting of the port of Dover。The plot is well paced and thought out, with clues scattered throughout the narrative。 The conclusion is satisfying, although it does not rely on Audrey's gifts as much as in other novels。 I particularly enjoyed the atmospheric descriptive passages, as the port provides new interesting scenes and a landscape for mystery。It left me eager to read the next installment to see how the series will conclude and see if they get their happy ending。 Although I'm also sad the series is coming to the end。Disclaimer: I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily。 。。。more
